Universal's eagerly anticipated actioner Fast Five debuted in 3,644 theaters, averaging $9,120, with a cast including Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Elsa Pataky and Joaquim de Almeida.
Justin Lin's Fast Five looks set to pass the $80 million mark come Sunday estimates and may become Universal's biggest opener yet.
Fox's animated Rio came second with $3,6 million and should hold steady ahead of Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion from Lionsgate in third with $3.1 million posted on Friday.
In Fourth, Water for Elephants, based on the novel by Sara Gruen and starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, made $2.9 million.
Ending off the Friday box office chart was Disney's badly rated Prom teen flick, grossing a paltry $1.85 million ahead of Weinstein Co's also critically-hammered Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil with $1.1 million.
