Movie audiences remained focus on the six new releases in cinemas this holiday weekend including the musical Black Nativity and Disney animation fairy tale Frozen. However, the exhibition department at Universal Pictures looked ahead to 2014 and beyond by shuffling release dates for two of their upcoming co-productions with Legendary Pictures. Variety reported that Seventh Son, director Sergey Bodrov’s adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s book about a young boy in the 18th century who apprentices to fight evil spirits, shifted from Jan. 17, 2014 to Feb. 6, 2015. Starring Jeff Bridges as the supernatural mentor and Julianne Moore as the evil witch, Seventh Son was originally set to open this past October.
Warcraft, director Duncan Jones’ adaptation based on the popular video game franchise, vacated its original release date of Dec. 18, 2015 to give the weekend to the next Star Wars movie. Instead, Universal scheduled Warcraft for March 11, 2016.
Universal also scheduled Cyber, director Michael Mann’s computer hacking thriller starring Chris Hemsworth for Jan. 16, 2015; director Rob Cohen’s thriller The Boy Next Door, starring Jennifer Lopez as a divorced mom who has an affair teenage neighbor, for Jan. 23, 2015 and its reboot of The Mummy for April 22, 2016.
