Friday box office sees Underworld: Awakening top with $9.4 million
Screen Gems' fourth installment in the franchise, featuring the return of Kate Beckinsale in her beloved Selene role, topped the charts on Friday as anticipated, and looks set to gross over $22 million come Sunday weekend box office estimates. In second, the Tuskegee airmen action drama Red Tails posted an estimated $6 million on Friday, and looks to end up with around $15 million over the weekend. Anthony Hemmingway directs the film which stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Cranston, Tristan Wilds, Lee Tergesen, Andre Royo, David Oyelowo and Daniela Ruah. George Lucas and John Ridley's story is adapted for the screen by Aaron McGruder and Ridley.
Universal Pictures' Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi starrer Contraband posted an estimated $3.7 on Friday, bringing its domestic cume to over $37.6 million thus far.
In fourth place, Warner Bros. Pictures' Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close made $3.2 million in its first wide expansion after a limited run last weekend. Total cume for the Thomas Horn, Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks drama is over $3.9 million.
Relativity Media's actioner Haywire helmed by Steven Soderbergh, opened with $2.9 million, with a cast including MMA superstar Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas on board. Pic should earn around $8 million from Friday to Sunday runs.
