Lionsgate's THE EXPENDABLES 2 starring Sylvester Stallone, got off to a strong start at the box office this weekend, grossing $10.5 million on Friday from 3,316 theaters. Pic should end off its weekend run in the high $20-to-low-$30 million range at best. The Tony Gilroy-directed film based on the novel by Eric Van Lustbader, also stars Edward Norton, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn and David Strathairn. Pic should make over $16 million come Sunday weekend estimates.
Third-placed SPARKLE with Jordin Sparks, the late Whitney Huston, Carmen Ojogo, Derek Luke and Mike Epps, posted $4.5 million as it heads to a $14-$15 million debut weekend total.
In fourth, Focus Features' animated offering PARANORMAN grossed $4.5 million from 3,429 theaters. Pic voiced by Kodi Smith-McPhee, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Anna Kendrick, John Goodman, Leslie Mann, Casey Affleck and Jodelle Ferland, should land in the mid $13 million weekend range.
Ending off the top five list, Warner Bros. Pictures' comedy THE CAMPAIGN frontlined by Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, generated $4.1 million from 3,255 runs. Expect a $12 million weekend take.
