REAL STEEL tops Friday box office with $8.7 million. Aims over $26 million

Hugh Jackman starrer Real Steel tops Friday box office over Ides of March.

Shawn Levy-directed science fiction action drama Real Steel is set to knock out the field at this weekend's box office, after pulling in an estimated $8.7 million Friday and aiming for what could be anywhere from $25-27 million come Sunday weekend estimated figures. Pic will most likely end in the low $25 million range at best.

Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie and Dakota Goyo starrer debuted in 3,440 theaters and is produced by Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey, Mary McLaglen and Josh McLaglen. John Gatins wrote the script based on the short story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven.

In second, George Clooney helmed drama from Sony The Ides of March, starring Ryan Gosling, Clooney and Philip Seymour Hoffman, opened in 2,199 theaters, grossing an estimated $3.7 million. Pic should turn in north of $9-10 million. Also in the strong cast are Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Max Minghella and Evan Rachel Wood.

Third-placed Warner Bros. Pictures family drama Dolphin Tale stayed on well with around $2.5 million grossed. Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. pic should take in $7-8 million come weekend total.

In fourth, critically acclaimed Sony drama Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, added just over $2 million, and looks to post somewhere around $6-7 million.

Rounding off the top five films on Friday is Summit Entertainment dramedy 50/50 starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) directed film from the story and script by Will Reiser, grossed around $1.7 million. Total weekend pull should be around $5+ million.
