Comic-Con 2008
"Twilight" Interviews - Actors Taylor Lautner and Edi Gathegi
Twilight

Twilight is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she’s ever met. Intelligent and witty, he sees straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than a mountain lion, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands – and he hasn’t aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he’s immortal. But he doesn’t have fangs, and he doesn’t drink human blood; Edward and his family are unique among vampires in their lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for – a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward & Bella do when James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), the Cullens’ mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for her?

ABOUT TWILIGHT:

Based on the current #1 New York Times Bestselling series (30 weeks and counting) with over 5.5 million books in print by Stephenie Meyer, TWILIGHT is a cultural phenomenon, with a dedicated fanbase that eagerly awaits this movie. There are over 100 fan sites devoted to Twilight, and it has been chosen as the New York Times Editor’s Choice, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, Amazon’s “Best Book of the Decade…So Far”, Teen People’s “Hot List” Pick, The American Library Association’s “Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults” and “Top Ten Books for Reluctant Readers” and has been translated into 20 languages. Critically acclaimed director Catherine Hardwicke brings to life this modern, visual, and visceral Romeo & Juliet story of the ultimate forbidden love affair – between vampire and mortal.

Next up after Robert Pattinson and Rachelle Levre came the other co-stars in Taylor Lautner and Edi Gathegi. Lautner plays Jacob Black and Gathegi one of James' (Cam Gigandet) posse of nasty vampires.

Question:

What are some of the highlights of making the movie?

Edi Gathegi:

"There's something really cool about having super strength, super speed, being immortal, never dying...that's sexy, and that's what's cool about playing...otherwise, they were all humans at one point so they're just human with all these other attributes. So I attack it as I would address any other role."

Question:

Is there more werewolf stuff than there is in the book?

Taylor Lautner:

"No, I wouldn't say so, I would say the script is very, very identical to the...you know, the only sign of werewolf you get is Sam Uley [played by Solomon Trimble] walking out for a split second but, they did a very good job at staying true to the book."

Edi Gathegi:

"One of the ways they insured that was by having Stephanie consult the movie the whole way through, she actually has a cameo in it. They honored her story very well, the fans are going to be very happy."

Taylor Lautner:

"That was Catherine's big thing, you know, she did an excellent job having Stephanie on there and staying true. So you know, the fans are definitely lucky to have Catherine, you know, she did the best job possible that a director could have done.

Edi Gathegi:

"She has a history of working with young talent - "Lords of Dogtown," "Thirteen," so she knows how to work with young artists and she's always dealing with the human aspect. She's perfect for this film."

Question:

Where you familiar with the books?

Taylor Lautner:

"I was not familiar with them before, but you know, once I realized, WOW! I'm Jacob Black, let's check into this and WOAH! These fans are amazing! This is huge. Yeah, it's really cool to be a part of this. I'm excited and just looking forward to bringing that character to life."

Question:

Where you fans of vampires or werewolves before this?

Taylor Lautner:

"To be honest, I've never really seen much vampire or werewolf stuff, but definitely, I'm a fan now."

Edi Gathegi:

"Before I can say that I wasn't a fan of vampire stories, until I read this one, which is true (yes he said true...), because this is not your typical vampire story; it's a story about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. It's a romance, and it's got the vampire element to it and once you believe the true human story, you go along with the vampire ride. I love the story, I wanted to be part of this story. So now, I'm open to the world of vampires!"

Taylor Lautner:

"I definitely think the cool part of this film is that romance is in there, it has everything for everyone. You know, it has the romance, it has the action...you know, the romance because of the girl falling in love with the vampire, but then because of the vampire aspect, it has non-stop action, you know, it's very dark. So, I think that's what the fans and everybody's going to love about the film.
