What happens if you have a more pronounced ability to pick up psychic cues - to hear thoughts, move objects, suggest ideas to strangers? You start working for the Division and they teach you how to hone those powers to where you almost seem like a real life superhero. But then what happens if you want to leave the Division? The answer: it's going to be complicated.
NICK (Chris Evans), a young American expat with the ability to move things with his mind is hiding out in Hong Kong to avoid being placed under the control of the DIVISION, the American supernatural intelligence agency. He’s a loner who wants nothing to do with the government or the resistance movement trying to bring the Division down, until the day a young clairvoyant girl, CASSIE (Dakota Fanning), turns up on his doorstep, claiming to have had a vision of their future. Cassie sees that Nick is going to save her life … but if he doesn’t help her, they’ll both wind up dead. Nick agrees to follow along with her plan – trying to elude the evil CARVER (Djimon Hounsou) – until the plan leads him to KIRA, his long lost lover (Camilla Belle).
Paul McGuigan, known for his unique style behind the wheel of "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Gangster Number One," directs Summit Entertainment's Push, a sci-fi thriller which looks guaranteed to please. The multi-talented cast includes Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans, Camilla Belle and Djimon Hounsou..
After speaking to Camilla Belle, Dakota Fanning and helmer Paul McGuigan, the avid action hero Chris Evans took a seat next to me for his run in the roundtables. Evans, a content guy with his place in the industry spoke about his philosophy and just enjoying what he does. He plays Nick Gant; Camilla Belle refers to his character in the film as having "issues with abilities - sometimes he's really bad, sometimes he's really good. He starts getting better and better."
Question:
Can you tell us about the character you play?
Chris Evans:
"Sure, I play Nick Gant and he's a mover, which is essentially that he's a telekinetic. Nick's father was telekinetic, Nick's father was actually killed by Division when Nick was eight. Nick's father was phenomenally powerful and Division felt that he was uncontrollable so they killed him; actually in front of Nick. As a result, he has no one else, no mother, no siblings. He's kinda turned his back on his power, on people. I think he chooses not to let anyone in because it's too painful. He's gone to Hong Kong to hide, to escape...and pretty much live a lonesome life."
Question:
On working with this telekinetic power:
Chris Evans:
"Well, the best thing in the movie is you get to see him kind of mature in his ability, you know, he kind of stopped using his power. I think it brings up brutal memories. I think the only time he uses his power is, he gambles a lot...a dice game...you know, where he kind of manipulates the dice. Other than that I think he's pretty clumsy. So throughout the film, you see his kind of growth in that field, and that was great because you get to work out how you would, you know, move a table. You do it with your eyes, your hands and doesn't always work out, doesn't go as far as you want it to. So it kind of lends itself to my own experience."
Question:
How is that different in what you did in other films? Most likely in reference to the "Fantastic Four" series of films. Chris Evans:
"Uh...pretty similar. You know, you gotta tap into a fantastical world that doesn't exist."
*laughter* due to his 'fantastical' comment as he plays Johnny Storm in "Fantastic Four."
Cont'd: "You gotta...how would someone move something with their mind, you know? You gotta take your own take on it, but I mean, who hasn't had practice doing that? We were all little kids. I can remember trying to move my pencil in math class..."
*laughter*
He continues: "So, you've just gotta tap into your inner child and be willing to be a little silly and believe it; if you don't believe it, then no one else will." Question:
Are you a big fan of sci-fi? Chris Evans:
"Sure am! It seems to be a genre I'm stuck in! I love those movies! I love movies, I'm a movie nut. Any movie that's done right, I love 'em. I really love 'em all. I love romance movies, I love comedies. These are just the ones that have kind of fallen my way and it's a treat. It's rare that you get to have a power; it's like a childhood fantasy. So I've been blessed, it's really never been by choice, it's like a lucky accident."
Question:
On his career taking off like it has: Chris Evans:
"It's good! it's stressful; no matter how things are going, there's always another hurdle to jump. For a while, I was really concerned...you know, when you first start...you make your first movie and you start thinking 'Alright, I'm gonna map this out right now! I'm gonna do this and then this, then in five years and then ten years. Nothing goes according to plan and you really drive yourself pretty crazy. So, I'm at a point now where I'm not thinking about the past; I'm not thinking about the future - I'm just grateful that I get to do what I love! If you just focus on that, the fact that I'm...I'm blessed you know? It's a blessing.
There are so many talented actors..A LOT more talented than me, you know, who don't have the opportunity that I have. So, instead of pre-occupying yourself where 'where is this going to lead?' and 'how am I handling it?' and 'am I on the right track?'...that's out the window. I just wake up really happy these days and try not to pre-occupy myself with where I'm going and where I've been."
Question:
His experience at a ComicCon panel this time around: Chris Evans:
"This was great, you know what I mean? I got a few more cheers this time. The first time around it was like 'Chris Evans!'...boo...It was nice, it's exactly how I remember it. I mean they tell you six thousand people and you try to visualize it and you walk out an you...It's great man, this is the best...you know, you work hard and you give everything you have on a project and the point of it is to share it with people and these are the people who want to see it more than anyone, so, it's such a reward to be appreciated for the work that you do." Question:
About any chances of a third "Fantastic Four" movie: Chris Evans:
"Oh, I think we're done. I'm pretty sure we're done. I can't say for sure, you never know, but I would imagine. Given the fact, after the first film...I think the week after the first film opened they were writing the next script and talking to us about it and very much involving us and we were up-and-running six months later. The second one came out and I haven't heard a word and it's been almost a year now. I would imagine 'Fantastic Four' is done. I think what they're gonna do is take the Silver Surfer franchise and run with that. There's so much history to that character and it's such a cool character and CGI, you don't have to pay an actor so it makes sense dollar-wise."
Not sure about that one since Laurence Fischurne voiced the 'Silver Surfer' in the last film. As talented a physical and voice actor Doug Jones is, he could never pull of such a distinct Fishburne voice to carry on to the next film. Also, despite rumors and, a false credit at IMDb, "Dark City" helmer Alex Proyas is NOT directing "Silver Surfer." Sorry fans...
