Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer moved closer to gaining a dream cast for his period crime drama Gangster Squad with word that Warner Bros. made official offers to Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin to star in the movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fleischer remained ready to schedule production once his leads are set.
Scriptwriter Will Beall, a former Los Angeles cop, adapted the articles by Paul Lieberman about a squad of Los Angeles police officers who battled organized crime lords like Mickey Cohen in the '40s and '50s.
Producers Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick described Gangster Squad as a mix of The Untouchables and L.A. Confidential.
Fleischer made his directing debut with Zombieland in 2009 and continued to be attached to the Zombieland sequel as well as the film Babe in the Woods.
Fleischer is currently shooting 30 Minutes or Less, about two criminals who force a pizza delivery driver to rob a bank, with his Zombieland lead Jesse Eisenberg.
