A handsome buffet of upcoming movies awaits audiences this weekend as several films vie for their share of the box office pie.
Warner Bros. Pictures unleashes their Journey 2: Mysterious Island sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth into over 3,400 theaters, with an appealing cast including the ever-popular Dwayne Johnson, talented Josh Hutcherson, veteran Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, Kristin Davis and Anna Colwell. Pic aiming for adventure-craving families, is helmed by Brad Peyton from the script by Brian and Mark Gunn, based on the story by the Gunns, Richard Outten, and of course the novel by Jules Verne.
Universal Pictures' Safe House starring Ryan Reynolds, Denzel Washington, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson and Sam Shepard, debuts in around 3,000 theaters, set to become one of two films shot in South African locations (the other being the incredible Chronicle), dominating the box office this weekend. Daniel Espinosa helms from the script by David Guggenheim.
Sony's The Vow will look to snare lovers over pre and post-Valentine's Day runs, with a cast including Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman, Wendy Crewson and Jessica Lange. Michael Sucsy directs from the screenplay by Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein and Jason Katims, based on the story by Stuart Sender.
Finally, 20th Century Fox's 3D reincarnation of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace scoops up fanboys keen for their view of the George Lucas film which returns to some 2,600 theaters. Enough said.
