Box office in the Underworld.
Screen Gems' action horror Underworld: Awakening is set to top the box office this weekend, with what should be a gross in the mid-$20 million range. The Kate Beckinsale starrer debuts in 3,078 theaters, helmed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, with a supporting cast including Michael Ealy, Theo James, Charles Dance, Stephen Rea, India Ealy, Sandrine Holt and Richard Cetrone.
Relativity Media's Haywire, starring Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas, could do more than anticipated with its 2,439 theater debut. Steven Soderbergh's actioner is pulling in an 80% positive score at RottenTomatoes.com thus far.
Warner Bros. Pictures' 911 drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close expands from its limited 6 theater debut run into 2,630 theaters, with talented Thomas Horn starring alongside, Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks. Pic should pull out a gross of somewhere in the low $10 million range.
Lucasfilm's Red Tails, helmed by Anthony Hemingway, opens in 2,512 theaters, with a cast including Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terence Howard, Bryan Cranston, Tristan Wilds, Ne-Yo, David Lyelowo, Michael B. Jordan and Method Man, among others. Pic has not been well-received, holding a 33% positive score on RottenTomatoes.com, but could do decent coin if it finds its target.
Factor in current number one player Contraband, and Beauty and the Beast 3D, both of which should show moderate changes in their sophomore weekend box office runs.
The Artist plays in 662 locations this weekend, and, powered by a win of three Golden Globes, should pull in decent coin. Other Weinstein player The Iron Lady should also manage solid numbers with a Golden Globe win for leading lady Meryl Streep.
