Shame, Coriolanus debut at box office as Breaking Dawn - Part 1 goes no 1

Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 should have it very easy this weekend without a single wide opener debuting at the box office. A rare occasion.

The first half of the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's massively popular book has already grossed over $228.1 million domestically, adding around $285 million overseas, for a worldwide gross of over $513 million.

Disney's The Muppets should finish in second in its sophomore weekend at the box office, showing a mediocre decline after debuting with $29.23 million over the Nov. 23-25 frame. Pic starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, has a $45 million production, and has grossed $44.4 million domestically, while overseas figures are at a mere $1.6 million.

With a buffet of limited openers making their way into the box office, Fox Searchlight Pictures' Shame, starring current massive star Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, A Dangerous Method) opens in a mere 9 theaters, and is the cream of the crop, despite its NC-17 rating. Steve McQueen reunites with his Hunger star, with a cast including talented dramatist Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale and Hannah Ware.

Other indie flicks on offer are as follows:

  • The heavy Answers to Nothing, starring Dane Cook, Elizabeth Mitchell, Julie Benz and Barbara Hershey. Matthew Leutwyler directs and writes. Pic gets 21 theaters for its run.
  • IFC's Sleeping Beauty directed and written by by Julia Leigh, with Sucker Punch star Emily Browning in the lead. Opens in 2 New York venues.
  • Lionsgate/Pantelion Films' foreign film Pastorela finds 55 theaters. Emilio Portes directs and scripts the comedy fantasy, starring Omar Ayala, Carlos Cobos and Joaquín Cosio.
