Friday box office sees Contagion, Drive suffer from Lion King bite.
Making its debut in 3D, Disney's The Lion King re-release topped the Friday box office with ease, grossing a hefty $8.8 million.
Disney animated pic which first saw theaters back on June 24th, 1994, could wind up grossing north of $20 million come Sunday weekend estimates. Voice talent for Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff-helmed Lion King includes Matthew Broderick, Nike Calame, Jim Cummings, James Earl Jones, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella and Jeremy Irons among others. According to boxofficemojo.com, pic has over $337.3 million domestically.
Last weekend's top spot holder Contagion from Warner Bros. Pictures, showed a 42% change on its second Friday, grossing $4.6 million from 3,222 theaters. Pic should pull in somewhere around $12-15 million come Sunday figures. Effective Stephen Soderbergh thriller stars Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow and Laurence Fishburne.
In third, Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive actioner, starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman, made around $4 million and should post just over $10 million over the weekend.
Sony's Straw Dogs remake starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgårdearned $1.85 million on its Friday debut from 2,408 theaters while Disney's The Help rounded off the top five spots with $1.93 million.
Comedy opener I Don't Know How She Does It from Weinstein Co opened in sixth place and should stay where it is come weekend estimates. Pic made $1.55 million from 2,476 theaters and stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Greg Kinnear and Pierce Brosnan.
