Marvel's the Avengers got off to a strong start at the box office, grossing $18.7 million from a huge 4,349 theaters, looking to post one of the highest summer openings ever.
According to Variety, this is the eighth largest midnight pocket ever, behind this year's other big opener - The Hunger Games from Lionsgate, with $19.7 million grossed from its midnight runs.
Out that total coin, $1.31 million came out of IMAX, and he format looks to deliver well over the weekend.
Estimates are somewhere in the region of $160-170 million come Sunday, however, for it's a battle to topple current king Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which holds the Midnight, Single Day and Top Opening Weekend records ($169 million on its debut). Compare the top openers ever here.
