J.J. Abrams remained busy with the start of production on Star Trek 2, the highly awaited sequel to his reboot of the Star Trek franchise, but he still managed to jump-start another TV series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC ordered a pilot to REVOLUTION, a thriller Abrams co-created with Eric Kripke of Supernatural.
The Hollywood Reporter described the pilot as the story of a group of characters struggling to survive in a world void of all forms of energy. Kripke signed on to write the pilot with Abrams producing with his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk.
TV pundits expressed surprise that Abrams partnered with NBC on the pilot since the network canceled his spy drama Undercovers in 2010 after only a couple of months.
Revolution was the second pilot order for Abrams this year coming after The CW ordered Shelter, a drama set in a New England summer resort. Meanwhile, Abrams’ Person of Interest received a full season order from CBS and Alcatraz continued to do well on Fox.
As far as Star Trek 2 goes, fans continue to wait for news about Benedict Cumberbatch’s major role; reportedly the main villain of the movie.
