Weekend box office topped by Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Dragon Tattoo, Tintin, Zoo can't compete.
Paramount Pictures' latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise finished in first place with an estimated $26.5 million from 3,448 theaters. Pic spread wide after a limited run in mostly IMAX venues last weekend, averaging $7,696 from 3,448 theaters in its sophomore weekend at play.
Day-by-day gross over the weekend for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol:
- Friday - $9.74 million.
- Saturday - $6.17 million.
- Sunday - $10.62 million.
In second place, Warner Bros. Pictures' sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows posted $17.8 million in its second weekend at play. Total domestic cume for the Guy Ritchie-directed pic starring Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams is now over $76.55 million. International coin is at around $14.6 million.
In third place, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked grossed $13,32 million in its sophomore weekend, showing a mild 43% change. On the domestic front, the family film has grossed over $50.2 million, while overseas money is at $41.3 million, from a $75 million production budget.
Sony's English-language The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig finished close behind in fourth with an estimated $13 million weekend cume. David Fincher-directed thriller opened in 2,914 theaters, averaging $4,461 per theater.
Paramount's The Adventures of Tintin ends the top five list with $9.12 million over Fox's Cameron Crowe pic We Bought a Zoo with $7.8 million. Both films posted disappointing openings, despite positive reviews for both films.
Steven Spielberg's second opener War Horse, starring Jeremy debuted today and we'll have figures on it tomorrow. Lee Hall and Richard Curtis adapt the screenplay based on the book by Michael Morpugo and the recent stage play by Nick Stafford. Starring are Jeremy Irvine, Tom Hiddleston, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson, Peter Mullan and David Cross.
Year-to-date revenue is at $9.914 billion vs. 2010's $10.376 billion, down by 4.46% while attendance is also down by 5.30%.
