Tom Cruise surrounded himself with a new Mission: Impossible team for the fourth installment of Paramount’s spy franchise, including Jeremy Renner, and the result was a strong $6 million in estimated Wednesday box office.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL not only led all holiday releases at the start of the extended Christmas weekend but looked to help reverse three post-Twilight, slumping weekends at the box office. Ghost Protocol opened in a limited run of 425 IMAX venues and large-format cinemas last Friday, and added 2,400 screens to its IMAX venues.
Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara kept Sony Pictures' English-language remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO close behind with an estimated box office take close to $5.5 million from 2,914 cinemas; boosted by an impressive $1.6 million in earnings from Tuesday night shows.
Meanwhile, Noomi Rapace, star of the original Dragon Tattoo, made her Hollywood debut in the weekend's top box office draw, director Guy Ritchie's sequel SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS alongside Jude Law, Rachel McAdams and Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows continued to play well matching the strong Wednesday earnings of Dragon Tattoo with earnings estimated between $4.5 and $5.5 million. Close behind were Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked with estimated earnings of $4 million and Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin with earnings estimated at $3 million.
