Disney slates Gore Verbinski-directed Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp starrer Lone Ranger for July 3, 2013

The eagerly anticipated release will open on the Fourth of July holiday weekend, reports Variety. Disney made the announcement today after they tapped Alan Horn as head of film.

Pic is set to open against Universal's animated follow-up Despicable Me 2, and, as recently announced, against Roland Emmerich's 3D reincarnated Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum starrer Independence Day.

The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio and Justin Haythe wrote the script for the Jerry Bruckheimer production which also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, James Badge Dale, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Frain, Ruth Wilson, Mason Cook and W. Earl Brown.

As far as the Thor 2 film goes, the Chris Hemsworth starrer will make its debut on November 8th, 2013, one week after Lionsgate's eagerly-anticipated Ender's Game.
