Just a few hours after Animal Kingdom star Joel Edgerton lit up the Internet with word that Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy and Universal execs wanted him to replace Matt Damon in the next Bourne movie, the studio confirmed that Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner was offered the marquee role.
According to Deadline, Renner was tested in two stages over a period of eight weeks along with Edgerton, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund and Luke Evans.
If he accepts, Renner would play an operative like Damon’s character Jason Bourne, who emerges from a covert government brainwashing program.
Renner recently completed a starring role alongside Tom Cruise in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and began production as the superhero archer Hawkeye in The Avengers.
No word yet if Renner plans to accept the Bourne Legacy offer but one has to admit he seems tailor made for the role.
Sorry Edgerton, but it looks like you’re all set for Snow White and the Huntsman now.
