Ryan Reynolds starrer powers the box office Friday as Green Lantern earns $21.6 million for director Martin Campbell.
Warner Bros. Pictures science fiction actioner adapted from the DC Comics comicbook Green Lantern, topped the Friday box office over Mr. Popper's Penguins starring Jim Carrey. Prior to that, Green Lantern earned $3.35 million from 1,810 midnight screenings. Film looks towards a $55 million debut weekend from 3,816 theaters and also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins, Temuera Morrison, Angela Bassett, Jon Tenney, Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clark Duncan.
20th Century Fox's Mr. Popper's Penguins grossed a second-placed $6.4 million from 3,339 locations. Cast includes Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Ophelia Lovibond and Philip Baker Hall.
In third, Paramount Pictures Super 8 sci-fi thriller helmed by J.J. Abrams who produces alongside Bryan Burke and Steven Spielberg, earned $6 million, starting it's sophomore weekend run. Total domestic cume thus far for the Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich and Ron Eldard starrer is around $57.5 million from a $50 million budget. Internationally, Super 8 has grossed $8.6 million.
Fourth-placed X-Men: First Class added $3.35 million, opening its third weekend trial. Matthew Vaughn-directed actioner has posted an estimated $111 million domestically and $133.9 million from overseas sales thus far.
Finished off the top five films at the Friday box office was The Hangover Part II with $3.18 million earned. Todd Phillips' comedy in its fourth weekend run, has managed to pocket a huge $226.2 million. Internationally, pic starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha has pulled in $216.4 million.
