HBO generated plenty of excitement for its acclaimed fantasy series GAME OF THRONES prior to its Golden Globes weekend. HBO announced last week that Season 2 of the Emmy-winning fantasy series would premiere April 1.
Author George R.R. Martin was the center of attention at the Game of Thrones table at the Golden Globes awards ceremony and he used the occasion to voice his concern about whether fans would remain faithful to the show after Sean Bean’s lead character Eddard Stark was killed off in the ninth episode of season one.
Martin pointed out that he was a writer on the popular fantasy Beauty and the Beast starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman and when they killed off Hamilton’s character at the start of the third season the fans stopped watching the show.
“We’ve only had one episode after Sean’s character died, and well, we’ll find out how it affects things,” Martin told the Hero Complex blog at the L.A. Times. “It was a big shock to a lot of people and it was interesting to see the response to it. It’s something I did, you know, 16 years ago when the book came out. So it wasn’t a secret, of course, but I could see the shock of it in the emails I got and on the blogs and the headlines. Time will tell how it affects the show, but hopefully the rest of the characters and their stories become compelling to people. But I have to admit I worry about it a little after the experience with Beauty and the Beast and Linda Hamilton.”
For the second season of its hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, based on the books by Martin, Welsh actor Robert Pugh joined the series as Old Craster, the master of Craster's Keep, located beyond the Wall, and a mysterious ally with the Night's Watch. Pugh joined other Season 2 additions including Gemma Whelan as Yara Greyjoy, older sister to Theon Greyjoy and a commander of her own ship and fierce fighter with a preference for axes.
