Weekend box office sees Fast Five franchise record. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker starrer is the best opener of the year.
Universal's latest installment in the Fast and Furious series of actioners, went on to pass the $80 million mark after turning in over $33 million on Friday. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Tyrese Gibson starrer debuted in 3,644 theaters, grossing $83.6 million at an average of $22,950 per venue.
Day-by-Day Weekend Gross Breakdown for Fast Five:
- Friday: $34.5 million.
- Saturday: $30.2 million.
- Sunday: $18.9 million.
In second place, 20th Century Fox's Rio animated pic added $14.4 in its third weekend, bringing its use cume to over $103.6 million.
Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family from Lionsgate showed a 60% change in its sophomore weekend box office run, grossing $10 million. Third-placed comedy's total cume is over $41 million thus far.
In fourth, Fox's Water for Elephants drama directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, earned $9.1 million. Richard LaGravanese directs from the novel by Sara Gruen.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures' comedy Prom ended off the top five spots in bad shape, turning in just $5 million from 2,730 theaters. Also under-performing was Weinstein Co's sequel animated comedy Hoodwinked Too! The Hood vs. Evil. Pic featuring the voice talents of Hayden Panettiere, Glenn Closse, Joan Cusack and Patrick Warburton among others, made $4.14 million from 2,505 theaters.
