DreamWorks co-chairman/CEO Stacey Snider championed Eminem’s (Marshall Mathers, pictured left) debut film “8 Mile” when she was head at Universal Pictures so the Detroit Rap star and his Shady Films producing partners Paul Rosenberg and Stuart Parr offered Snider first shot at acquiring his next drama “Southpaw.”
According to “Deadline,” Snider quickly acquired the project, a drama with Eminem playing a welterweight boxer who earns the title only to see his world fall apart due to tragedy and “Sons of Anarchy” creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter writing the script.
Sutter described “Southpaw” as a drama inspired by Eminem’s own struggles and his love for boxing.
“In a way, this is a continuation of the “8 Mile” story but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life,” Sutter said. “He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits hard bottom and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter.”
Eminem recently received 10 Grammy Award nominations for his recent album “Recovery.”
Sutter pledged to finish his draft of “Southpaw” by February.
No word yet on possible directors for Eminem’s comeback movie.
