Director Joe Johnston and star Chris Evans continued to promote their World War II era superhero movie Captain America: The First Avenger understanding there’s a lot of competition this summer and some moviegoers may have a hard time with the film’s period setting.
“A great story is a great story no matter when it’s set,” the 29-year-old Evans told The Los Angeles Times.
Evans also complimented the CG effects team on the film for nailing the scenes when Steve Rogers volunteers for a secret experiment that transforms him into the super soldier known as Captain America.
“They nailed it,” Evans added. “It works. They really put a lot of time into it. It was a big relief for me.”
While Evans and Johnston went to great efforts to accurately capture the World War II setting of their film, Evans admitted that it’s strange coming back as Captain America in the present-day Marvel Universe adventure The Avengers.
“Just think about text messaging,” Evans continued. “That’s the way I communicate with my friends now. If one of them calls me I’m like, ‘Why didn’t you just text me?’ And that’s pretty new. Cell phones haven’t been around that long. I remember when people didn’t have them and the Internet has totally changed the world in a relatively short period of time. Think of how strange all of it would be to someone from the 1940s who looks around and wonders what happened to all the things that were important to them.”
Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22, 2011 and production on The Avengers is underway.
