Busy promoting her film “Certified Copy,” the latest drama from director Abbas Kiarostami, veteran French actress Juliette Binoche admitted that she had no idea why fellow French actor Gerard Depardieu slammed her in a recent interview with the Austrian magazine "Profil."
"Please, can you explain to me what the secret of this actress (Binoche) is meant to be?" Depardieu asked the interviewer. "I would really like to know why she's been so esteemed for many years. She has nothing. Absolutely nothing!"
Binoche hinted that perhaps Depardieu’s rant is more about himself and less about her.
“I don’t know him and I don’t know what I did to him,” Binoche told BBC Radio 4. “I understand that you don’t have to like everyone and you (can) dislike someone’s work. But I don’t understand the violence of his words. I think it has to do with himself. There’s something going on.”
Binoche did admit that she had dinner with Depardieu a few years ago and he accused her of “always making beautiful films.”
“I didn’t have the answers to that because I didn’t completely understand what he meant by that,” she continued. “And then, after that, I thought, are you supposed to do not-beautiful films? I provoked him without knowing I provoked him, I think.”
Depardieu is currently in the French crime drama "Mesrine: Killer Instinct" and Binoche’s new film “Certified Copy” is due for U.S. release in March 2011 from IFC Films. For the sake of sheer entertainment, let’s hope Binoche continues to provoke Depardieu without knowing she’s provoking him.
