Disney unspools its next teen-drawing venture in “Hannah Montana: The Movie” into 3,115 venues, certainly pulling in tons of fans of the eagerly followed series. The question? Do they have what it takes to down “Fast and Furious” in its sophomore weekend at play?
“Furious” has turned in the biggest gross of the year so far with $70.9 million grossed and a total of over $85 million pocketed thus far. “Montana” is helmed by Peter Chelsom, known for crowd-pleasing films like “The Mighty,” “Serendipity” and “Shall We Dance.”
Two other wide openers will be vying for a slice of the weekend’s earnings but should pose no threat to the first two films. The first is the mall cop comedy “Observe and Report” which finds 2,727 locations and stars the ever-popular Seth Rogen as well as Michael Peña and Anna Faris. Jody Hill of “The Foot Fist Way” directs and writers the screenplay. We have two reviewswith different perspectives on the Donald De Line produced film.
Next is Justin Chatwin starrer “Dragonball Evolution,” another film from Fox which shouldn’t cause much of a stir, although the film would probably perform better than their “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” offering. Action flick debuts in 2,181 locations.
Only a single limited opener finds its way into theatres – the documentary “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” from Abramorama. Pic is directed by Sacha Gervasi sees three New York and Los Angeles venues.
Next weekend Zac Efron and Matthew Perry star in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “17 Again,” Jason Statham returns in “Crank: High Voltage” for Lionsgate and Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren frontline “State of Play” from Universal Pictures.
